WOW what snow - a weekend with Anna and Tino in Brugge, Belgium. The heavens opened and we were covered in snow within minutes.

Travelling around Japan we were anxious to photograph rice harvesting. We took some pictures in the south but it was not until we were with Misao, near Hamamatsu, that we stumbled across a family tying up the rice for drying. Of course we stopped to take a look. The family invited us to help, which was fun. This dear lady, all of 88 years, was only too happy to pose for photographs before getting back to work...

This is a stunning spot in the mountains in Nikko, west of Tokyo. Whilst the leaves were only beginning change in most places but these - well the picture tells the story! Added to this I have never seen so much fresh water in all my life!

Ned Kelly is probably Australia's most infamous son.

Ned Kelly was captured at Glenrowan, following a seige at Ann Jones' Inn. The inn was burnt to the ground as was the next buliding. The third one, a brick construction has also gone. At present a team is looking for artifacts related to the seige. It is amazing what is being found. The floor plan of the last building, a cellar, bones (animal), names, coins are amongst the treasure. The most prized are two bullets that are believed to date from the seige period.

There is a good deal of media coverage relating to this unearthing as it is a unique happening in Australia....

I have always wondered what it would be like to drive a tram. Well I guess this is the closest that I will get. Graham and I, with an hour to spare, took the free tram around the peripheral of Melbourne's CBD. It is well worth the time; being informative and enjoyable but a little crowded at times!

Mungo National Park...

This is a beautiful part of our land and YES we will visit it again very soon...

Mungo National Park is a part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, a chain of dried-out lakes that were once strung between Willandra Creek and the main channel of the Lachlan River in Outback NSW.

Lake Mungo dried up around 14,000 years ago, and today a great crescent-shaped dune, called the Walls of China, stretches along the eastern shore of the lakebed. These dunes, of mud and sand, are continually eroding by wind and water. Left behind is a fragile landscape of crinkled, fluted outcrops and shifting sand, which changes colour from a daytime khaki to the vibrant yellows, oranges, and deep wine reds of sun set.

It was at Mungo, in the drought-affected summer of 1969, that a young scientist stumbled across the remains of a cremated skeleton of a human, later to be known as Mungo Woman. Six years later, he found Mungo Man, buried in a pit strewn with ochre.

Carbon dating showed that Mungo woman was at least 26,000 years old, and that Mungo Man lived some 62,000 years ago. The discovery threatened to rewrite the history of human occupation in Australia, and had profound implications for the origins of modern man. More recently, the scientific consensus is that both skeletons are around 40,000 years old.

Stone flake tools are scattered across the landscape, and peeking out of the mud are ancient wombat holes, fossilised chunks of Eucalyptus trees, and the bones of long-dead marsupials, including extinct buffalo-sized wombats and giant kangaroos.

This is a recent favourite image that I took at Lake Eildon. The lake is down due to the drought and water usage down steam so many old buildings and relics are coming to the surface. This is the strainer post belonging to the Peachey family house that went under water some 50plus years ago. When the lake is full this post would be under about 30 metres of water!

This was the evening sky over our lake last Thursday - quite beautiful. Moments earlier there was a PINK (edged slightly with blue) rainbow going up nearly vertically from the horizon into the sky - unfortunately I was unable to capture it as we were too close to houses and had to wait till we made it to the lake - guess I did get beautiful reflections though...

bridge of nightmares...

This is the bridge of my nightmares - over the Goulburn River at Seymour. As a kid going to Melbourne by car it was fraught with danger - the old Morris Oxford breaking down in heaps of mud at Avenel, trees falling over the car in a storm, the obligatory stop at the Kalkallo Pub, and not to mention the impatience brewed over a cold three plus hour drive. As a result I dreamt about it - and this was the bridge pivotal to nightmares. The bridge was always falling behind me as the car tried desperately to get to the other side. Eventually after many fitful sleeps I willed the car to the other side and bingo the dream ceased. Looking at the bridge today is it any wonder I had nightmares.

The HISTORY - the bridge was built in the late 1800's and ceased as a Hume Highway Bridge in 1967. If it wasn't for steel girders I am sure it would be on the bottom of the river!

I noticed these growths on an old tree when walking around Benalla Lake. Some of the fungus was growing up the cracks in the bark making the tree look like it was smouldering - thought it was very pretty...

On our recent trip to Merimbula (NSW) we encountered many friendly pelicans. As they were very close I had fun taking lots of photos from all angles. I especially like the fellow in the top right of the selection. Sure takes into account the old saying - 'A pelican's beak can hold more than its belly can'!

Australian War Memorial - London...

This beautiful (nearly new - 11th november 2003) memorial is found at Hyde Park Corner in London. It is made from Western Australia green granite and has the name of 47 battles and 24000 towns engraved into the surface. These towns represent the birth place of all Australian service men. There are place names from across Australia and Great Britain.

Finding Benalla was difficult, but with perseverence we found it. It is spelt incorrectly (Benella).

Looking on the web we found a great web site that tells you which panel to find a town. Even little localities are included. www.awmlondon.gov.au

I captured these shots of a male lyre bird at the Healesville Sanctuary. He was being fed about two metres away from me. He is looking for a mate so was happy to display his tail. After eating his fill he flew to a nearby tree and sang very loudly.
I was surprised to find that the males lose their tail in November and it regrows in March - just in time for the mating season. There is only one female in the enclosure and at present she has one very small chick.

I have often thought that I would love to travel through England/Scotland on the canal systems. BUT on finding these locks I wonder...
They are special and yes somewhat exceptional... The Caen Hill Lock system near Devizes has 29 successive locks, which raise the water level 72 metres in just 2.5 miles. The young couple in the featured boat had been hard at work since 8.00am in the morning to get half way through at 12.00pm. Now that is not relaxing! As they said an evening in a local pub was keeping them going!

ANZAC Day was a day of mixed emotions for us, but I can think of no better way to reflect than amongst so many others doing the same on a magnificent autumn day.

We spent ANZAC Day wandering inner Melbourne. One spot I had not been to was this bridge. It lay unused and derelict for many years and when South Bank and the Casino were developed many ideas were put forward to redevelop the bridge. The end result is amazing and beautiful. Along the edge is a mural that recognises all the different ethnic communities that have made Australia what it is today. This is fringed with the massive steel sculptures. They slowly move and at times are clumped together and they then spread out.

During Easter we did a little 4 wheel driving near Tatong and were surprised to hear the trickling, gurgling sound of running water - the Holland's Branch was running - small? - yes - but still running - only a month before it was completely dry - the first time it had been dry since 1914.

This creek makes its way down through Tatong and here it is on a friend's property. The first photo was taken on 17th January and the second shot on Easter Sunday. It certainly is a step (or drop) in the right direction.

During March we were lucky enough to have two rainy days. Each produced an inch of rain. The effect was amazing. Spirits rose as did hope and greenery. Now we need more, lots more!

When growing up, we would see many hop farms in the Mytleford and Myhree Valleys but now most is grown in Tasmania and more so, overseas. Recently we saw this healthy crop near Bright, Victoria. I wonder how it is harvested as in the past my peers would pick it by hand. They would come back to school deeply suntanned and their hands very blistered and scratched ...

Out of all the destruction we found this extensive soak / spring. It was close to Tolmie on the Benalla - Tolmie Road. In all the years and the many times that we have travelled along this road little did we know what was hidden just off the edge. The most amazing thing about it is that here we are in the middle of an extreme drought and it is still functioning very well. Mother Nature certainly knows how to surprise!

Travelling through this area over the past few years I have been intrigued with this house. It is just off the road about 5 kilometres from Tolmie on the Whitfield Road. I don't know what they do for water - maybe there is a small creek behind. It was a lovely setting BUT surrounded with far too many trees. And it was for sale...

Now it will need a little TLC...

Toombullup ...

Toombullup is an area between Tatong and Tolmie. It is dear to Graham's heart as it was in this forest that the small timber settlement of Toombullup once existed. Graham's parents and older siblings live there for a number of years. All that is left is a huge sawdust heap and some scrap metal. Until the fires it was almost impossible to access but now maybe it will reveal some hidden treasures!

One lightning strike and tinder dry scrub and forests has caused havoc in our nearby hills (Tatong). Over 33 000 hectares has been burnt in this latest fire. A drive through the area produced some eerie sights...

Fire, drought, water restrictions... Where will it end? These pictures show the Upper Ryans creek (left) and the Hollands Branch, both vital steams that feed our water supply system. Both are very dry. The spot on the Holland's is where as a child I spent many a happy hour playing in the water with my family. It was last totally dry in 1914!

The last two nights we have watched the intense red glow (and at times flames) of the Tatong fires. However tonight with the lack of wind we are shrouded again in smoke. Whilst we are very aware of the smoke its is quite high so the sunset forced its way through to give us a spectacular display...

Just when we thought that we could breathe again somewhat more easily, we are faced with more fires very close (TOO CLOSE) to our community. Travelling home from Shepparton Jodi and I noticed smoke in the distance. This fire has gathered momentum between Mollyulah and Tatong, just 20 kilometres from home. Everything is so tinder dry - perfect fodder for a hungry fire. The photos were taken along the Benalla - Tatong Road at 7.00pm - not a pretty sight...

This is one of our favourite local areas. Many a great day has been spent climbing the rocks and boiling the billy to cook hot dogs. The recent fires have decimated the area. I guess time will heal and maybe even reveal some new plants!

Well almost! The first photo was taken on 4th December the second at the beginning of January - a month of stage 2 water restrictions - no lawns can be watered. At the moment we can water the garden for a couple of hours on alternate days. Ah... but others are suffering more!

Late Friday afternoon we had quite a lot of lightning and now we have severe wild fires near Benalla. These extend over the mountains to the coast. Many are in inaccessible mountain areas and are burning fiercely. We are expecting temperatures around 40 degrees at the weekend so everyone is bracing themselves...

Ok I was wrong - it is a tractor - in fact a yellow tractor... BUT did the driver think so?

As some may have read through Ellen's Blog, Graham and I have been very busy scanning old baby photos of Ellen and Anna. Our own photos were fading out of existence due to film processing in the late 1970's. My sister, Janet, then found that she had many snaps of the kids on slides and as we now have a new printer/scanner that can scan slides, we got busy. The results are fantastic.
